A vertex can mean the point where two sides of a polygon meet. (The corner) It can also mean the "turning point" for a parabola, a hyperbola, or an ellipse.

Two concepts 1. Vertex of an angle is the point where two rays(orsegments) join 2. Vertex of figure such as parabola is its extreme point
