Question by  deanping (14)

If someone with the title "Sr." dies, is the surviving same-named son still "Jr?"

George Sr. dies. Is the son, George Jr., still "Junior" as part of his legal name, or can he drop it, legally? Junior has a son, George III.

If someone that is considered a Sr. passes away that does not mean that they cease to exist. A person is named Jr. because they are named after another person. If that person passes away it does not discount the fact that the Jr. is not the original holder of that name.

Yes, the suffix is used to legally distinguish two individuals with the same name. Changing the designation over the lifetime of any individual would create the ambiguity.
