How to tell if your hermit crab is a boy or a girl?

You have to look when it's not in its shell. Don't force it out for this. As you look at it on its back with its head at the top, look at the bottom BIG pair of legs. If your crab is a girl, it will have holes in the legs close to the center of the body.

After you give the crab a bath, they might come out of their shell. Look on the last set of legs for 2 little holes; those holes indicate a female.

This is difficult to determine, and typically unimportant to owners as they don't mate in captivity. Two areascan be used by specialists to figure out gender. The first is the pleopods, which look like hair and extend from the left side. The second is the gonopores, tiny holes that only exist on the bottom of females.

The claws of the male hermit crab are longer than in the female. The males are longer than it's body and the females as long as it's head.
