The answer to this question will vary from child to child. Children who are sixteen or older are usually capable of safely staying at home by themselves for short periods of time, given they do not have any medical or psychological problems that would permit them from doing so. Make sure you openly communicate your expectations with your child.

The age at which kids can legally be left alone varies by state, but the national recommendation is that children under 12 should never be left home alone.

Children should not be left alone until they are capable of handling an emergency situation, calling 9-11 if needed and taking care of their basic needs. This is going to vary by child and maturity level.

Obviously this is a judgment depending on their maturity, your surroundings, how far away you'll be, and what length of time. Age 12 to 13 seems reasonable.
