In total, it's usually around 8 years. You need to have completed 4 years of medical school followed by another 4 years as a pediatric resident after graduation. If you decide to specialize in something such as Pediatric Oncology, you'll most likely spend another 2-3 years in a post-resident fellowship program.

Pediatricians are doctors and have to attend six years medical school, after they finish their four years of undergrad. You'll then choose to specialize in peds and get more training in that area.

The human body (and particularly the rapidly growing human body) is a very complex system so it takes a lot of education to learn how to work with that system.
