The Amazon is the second longest river in the world, at approximately 6,400 kilometers. It has many tributaries. The latest count of it's tributaries is well over 1,000, including 17 major rivers themselves over 1,000 kilometers long each. The longest of these is the Purus, which stretches for nearly 3,000km through Peru and Brazil.

We don't know the exact number of tributaries, but we do know of more than one thousand of them, and suspect many more exist. These tributaries flow into the Amazon River from several highlands, such as the Guinea Highlands, the Brazilian Highlands, and the Andes mountain range. Several bodies of water also lead into the Amazon River.
