There are fifty states in the U. S.. Although technically four of those 50 (Kentucky, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts) are 'commonwealths', there's no effective difference. In addition there are a number of territories and possessions -- Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Marianas Islands -- and one federal district, the District of Columbia.

There are fifty but there was once one called Franklin after Benjamin Franklin but it was incorporated into Tennessee. Hawaii was the last state to become a state. There was 13 original colonies that became the first thirteen states after the revolution.

There are 50 states in the United States. They were added over a period of time with the first thirteen states being the thirteen original colonies of England. After the Declaration of Independence was signed, states were added to the union with the last state to officially become a state being Hawaii.
