The closer a shape comes to a circle, the more people it can fit. This is because there is no wasted area on the ends. An octagonal table can fit people on all sides, so it will hold more people, whereas a rectangular table has empty ends.

The answer to this question depends on the size of each of the tables. In general, an octagonal table will only fit 8 people. That would be one per side. A rectangular table might be able to fit 3 or 4 per side and then one or two more on the end for between 8 and 12 per table.
