How many hours should a one year old be up before going to sleep for the night?

According to the sources I've read its perfectly normal for a 1 year old to be sleeping 10-12 hours and have a couple of 1 hour naps. Most parents at this age have the opposite concern - their kids won't settle down and become over-stimulated. If you are genuinely concerned, maybe its best you check with your doctor.

Babies sleep according to their own growth rate. Our bodies grow and heal best while we are asleep. Should the baby be highly active over short periods of time, the need for sleep will arrive quicker. Babies do not have the stamina for long hours of play without naps.

My Children go to bed at 7pm and wake up around 7am. My one year old takes an afternoon nap for about an hour. If that wouldn't work for you. Have them take a nap in the morning for about an hour and maybe another around one for another hour. If they go to sleep later then 7pm.

It depends very much on the individual child. If your child is sleeping through the night, say 7pm to 7 or 8pm, as well as napping, then all is well. If their napping is stopping them from sleeping through the night, then try keeping them awake during the day or gradually decreasing their nap time.

One year old children require a great deal of sleep, including naps during the day. It is generally not a good idea to keep them awake in the evening unless they are arising way too early in the morning. Trust the wee one to know his/her own sleep needs best.
