There are approximately 20 city blocks in 1 mile (if you are walking in Manhattan in a north/south direction). This means that each block is 1/20 of a mile or 264 feet (~80 meter in the metric system). This is only an average as there are also some irregular length blocks as you walk the city.

It can be about 4 or 5 long blocks to get from one avenue to another. Th other thing is it also depends some avenues are shorter than others and it might be 3 blocks from one avenue to another.

20 blocks is equal to 1 mile. Avenues run north south and disect the length of Manhattan. Blocks run East west and disect the width of Manhattan. While 20 blocks equals 1 mile, the distance between two avenues is greater then the distance between 2 blocks.

Too long if you are walking, especially on hot summer days.
