These newer vehicles use a speedometer sensor mounted on the transmission tail housing or the transfer case to convert the circular motion signal received from the speedometer drive gears in to an electric signal that can be read by car computer.

A modern speedometer works by using sensor mounted in the transmission or on the wheels to measure speed. It calculates speed based on the rpm's and the drive ratio.

It depends on the age of the vehicle. Older vehicle use a worm gear mounted on the transmission. Newer vehicles use a digital sensor located in different positions; most commonly on the tail shaft output on the transmission. The older vehicle also have an analog gauge in the dash while newer vehicle have tamper proof digital counters.

The speedometer is hooked up to the wheel sensors and it controls how fast the wheel is spinning. It basically reads the speed as you are seeing it on the dash.
