Its a plug for your cervix so you won't get pregnant that sometimes causes a heavier period. You need to get fitted for it so they'll do a pelvic exam to measure your cervix.

The Mirena IUD is a small device injected into the skin to help prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years. First you will need to see your doctor to consult if this is the right form of birth control for you. In some cases, the doctor will prefer a different method.

The Mirena is inserted by a physician. It delivers a small amount of the hormone progestin directly to the uterine wall that blocks fertilized eggs from implanting into the uterus. This is an effective method of birth control and can be taken out at any time when pregnancy is again desired.

A gynecologist inserts a Mirena IUD into a woman's uterus during a regular office visit, usually a week after her period. The device releases progestin which thickens the cervical mucus and altering the uterine wall to prevent sperm from reaching a fertile egg.

First you go in while you are on your period to your doctor. Then you lay down and they will insert it. You have to use a back up method for two weeks. Then you are safe for 3 years.

When getting an IUD one must set up an appointment for a pap smear to make sure everything is normal. If so, you will come back for the procedure. They insert the IUD up into the uterus. This can be very painful. Usually it takes a few days to feel normal again.
