How does sunless tanning lotion work?

I'm worried that it might have really bad effects long term.

The DHA in sunless tanning lotion reacts with the dead skin cells on the top layer of skin. It usually lasts for 5-7 days with no adverse affects.

Sunless tanning, often referred to as "tan in a can" is a safe alternative to tanning beds and natural sun tanning. Sunless tanning is usually a lotion of sorts that has coloration, one applies the lotion where a tan is wanted and rub it in. The difficult part is making sure you apply evenly.

You do not need to worry that sunless tanning lotions will be bad. Basically, they are lotions with a color pigment in them that causes the skin to turn a tan color. However, you need to be aware and try some on a small area first that is will not give an orange tint to it as some do.

Sunless tanning lotions contain dihydroxyacetone, a colorless sugar. When applied, the sugar changes color as it reacts with dead cell skins on the surface of your skin. An allergic reaction is always a possibility with any product, but the risks are minimal. The lotion doesn't protect you from the sun.
