A pop up blocker is a program (or web browser add-on) that prevents websites from opening new browser windows ("pop-ups") on your computer. Pop ups are often unwanted advertisements.

A popup blocker usually has a blacklist of URLs to block. A popup having one of these URLs is not allowed and is automatically disabled when it attempts to load.

A pop up blocker usually works by looking for a trigger in a language called JavaScript. Most pop-ups use a certain sequence of commands in JavaScript to work correctly. Some pop-up ad designers are now using different techniquest to try and evade blockers, such as using Flash to generate ads.

A pop-up blocker detects when a website tries to open a new window without the the user requesting it explicitly (ie not clicking on a link or submitting a form) and forbids the creation of the window.
