You need to get in very good shape. Pick you favorite track events to compete in & begin practicing. If you have any friends who are already on the team, ask them what their practices are like. You may want to start lifting weights also to strengthen your body & improve stamina. Also, start eating healthy.

Practice whatever event you do in track and field (running, shotput, long distance, javelin, etc. ), and go from there. Each track and field event is different, and because of this, would require different exercises to make you better. In the end though, anything to do with cardiovascular and strength training can only help.

Training should be kept simple with both long distance running and short distance running as your main focus. Get yourself to a good quality indoor track on a daily basis.

circuit training is an excellent compliment to track and field, alot of reps of different excersizes, in quick succession, will help build the stamina needed for this sport, without becoming muscle bound.
