How do you recover impounded cars?

You would contact the impound lot first. The should be able to tell you what's need for them to release the car to you.

If your car was impounded,you must pay the fine, and complete all needed document's of driving a car. if it is a case of simple traffic violation,then you will completed your all needed document's, and pay the fine.or if it is a criminal case, then you will most likely have to go to the jail and release your car.

If you take someone with you that has a current insurance policy to drive other vehicles then I don't see the problem.Yes you are right in that many insurance companies are now covering the angle of stopping other people recovering cars using their policies. That said I'm sure one of your friends will have insurance that doesn't include this condition.
