You need to know what the supplied or required air pressure is for the specific tool you want to use. Many tools need a minimum of 60psi to 100psi of maintained air to operate. You want a slightly larger compressor than is required this will reduce run times.

You need to compare the requirement of each tool to the output of the compressor. Compressor are rated by cfm so select tools that operate in the same range.

Most air tools have a minimum operating range stamped on them. You need to be sure your compressor will maintain the minimum air pressure needed in order to ensure your tools will operate properly. Most compressors that are rated to operate tools are twin cylinders and have a minimum tank size of 40 gallons.
