You should chose a material that works with the decor of the room you are putting them in, and that is slightly heavier. Next cut the fabric to the right length/width for the window. Then sew a flat hem on each of the long sides and at the bottom. Lastly fold the top over about 2" making a rod pocket.

To make drapes, use curtaining material. Ensure that it matches your furnishings and walls. Measure your windows first. Measure from curtain rail to floor and add enough for hems at top and bottom. For width, measure windows rail-end to rail-end adding on another 50% or more for hems and gathers.
