The seed leaves are the first leaves--the ones that come out of the seed. All of the leaves that grow after this are true leaves. Seed and true leaves on most, but not all, plants, look very different. Seed leaves usually turn yellow and fall off after a while.

Once a seed has germinated it will send up two sets of leaves, which are not the true leaves. The true leaves will be the second set emerging.
