The best way (although your kids may not be willing to do so) is to shave their heads. Then you should wash all clothes, bedding, and other such things and dry them on the hottest setting. Vacuum the house. There are prescription shampoos available, some of which work better than others.

A trick my mum taught me for head lice is, wash your kids hair in conditioner that way the nits can't stick to the hair. Nits only like clean hair and also always check for the eggs. Only wash their hair once a week and comb with nit comb regularly.

To completely get rid of lice, the person must strip down all bed clothes and either bag them up for a few weeks or wash them in hot water. The person must also use special shampoo and furniture spray created for killing all lice. Comb and discard all nits.

First stop the spread by screening every household member for the presence of head lice and have them treated right away with a head lice shampoo available from local drugstore. Make sure to change all the beddings for some eggs thrive in it.

Everything that may have come in contact with the infested person, including clothing, bedding or toys, should be washed in hot water. Use a medicated shampoo and fine-toothed lice comb to remove nits. Try to keep the humidity in your house low to help kill off remaining lice. Vacuum all rooms and mattresses thoroughly.

My daughter had lice too. The over the counter washes did not work. I used vaseline in my daughters hair, washed than combed through with a nit comb. It worked!
