Figuring out a daily calorie target just requires some simple math. To maintain current weight, a person should be eating around 2,000 calories a day, or 14,000 a week. There are 3,500 calories in one pound of fat. To lose about two pounds a week, a dieter would want to consume 10,500 calories a week or 1,500 a day.

First determine your daily calorie need from one of numerous available online sites. A standard figure is 2000 calories daily. A pound of fat has 3500 calories so two pounds contain 7000. To eat 7000 calories less weekly would reduce you to 1000 daily, insufficient for maintaining healthy nutrition. Try increasing physical activity and a minimum calories intake of 1200.

An average pound of fat contains 3500 calories. To lose 2 pounds you need to eat 7000 calories less a week. This is 1000 calories less a day. Assuming you're sedentary an approximate calculation of your requirments daily is 12 cal per pound body weight. Subtract 1000 calories from this amount to find how many you have left to eat.
