Any good orator knows their audience well and will write the speech in a way that the audience can connect to the message being delivered. During the speech, it is good to make eye contact with the whole audience, but also remember to not fidget and keep good posture which may require holding onto a podium if you're nervous.

If you use a powerpoint, don't let it control you, you control the powerpoint. Have your speech memorized, don't rely on cue cards, and face the audience.

I would decide on my subject, develope an outline, write the speech on notecards to use as a crib, and then practice presenting the material. I would first practice by myself, but I would finish rehearsing using friends or family as an audience to help with physical presence. This should resultin a smooth performance.
