How do you crochet hats?

I would like to crochet hats for our military serving in Iraq.

I start crocheting in the rounds and increase 1 each row. Then when the circle gets big enough to fit a person's head, I just do single crochets until it is long enough to cover the head!

I believe the hats for the military have to be wool. There are specific colors allowed officially. For a simple stocking hat chain 3, make 12 double crochets in the 3rd chain from the hook.Join with a slip stitch. Continue crocheting around, increasing each row until the hat is the size needed for an adult.

The best way to do it is by working in the round. Start with a circle, increase each row until it is large enough to cover the cap of your head, then work straight rows until it's long enough to be pulled over the forehead and/or ears.

Chain two stitches then make a circle. Crochet all the way around like a spiral until you've reached the size of the crown. Start deducting stitches then you will notice it become more tunnel-like. Finish at desired length.
