The best way to connect an HDTV to a DVD player is with an HDMI cable. 5 wire component cables are the next best way.

Normally you would use an HDMI cable, generally about $20-30 for a 6foot one at WalMart, and plug it into the HDMI input on the back of your TV and the other end in the HDMI output on the back of your DVD player.

Look at the connection on the television and on the dvd player. If both devices are reasonably new, they will support HDMI cable which you can connect to two. Otherwise, component connection using red, white and yellow cables will work. Check the manual if you are not sure for specific connections.

Your television must be HD compatible in order for it to receive and HD input or broadcast. There is no way to route your HD cable box in pass through to your television. Even if there was, you would not enjoy the benefit of having HD cable. If you had a Blu-Ray player/receiver it would be an HDMI cable.
