You have to have a high school diploma (or GED)and vocational training in stenography. Most states require you to pass an exam that requires you to take dictation at around 80 words per minute and type at least 40 words per minute.

At minimum, a court reporter must have an Associates Degree from an accredited two year college. The most common degrees are an Associate of Science in Court Reporting or an Associate of Applied Science in Court Reporting. Many individuals also choose to pursue Bachelors and Masters Degrees in this area.
