Dogs get worms by eating the feces of another animal who had worms and the eggs are inside the feces. Otherwise it can be transmitted from human food that was not cooked properly or even water that wasn't properly filtered. Puppies also get them from being with their mother and drinking her milk.

Anything they eat - including fleas, if they get even one (when they lick themselves) - can give a dog worms. They can get them from water, as well, if they drink unclean sources. Worms are exceptionally common, and almost impossible to prevent except via treatment.
