Record stores report to the record companies how many copies of the albums that were shipped they have left or when the store order more, the record companies count how many were shipped out. THe record stores have to pay the record companies for the albums that they sell.

They take a literal count by requiring the sales agents to report the daily, weekly or monthly sales figures of the respective album.
