Laxatives have many different methods of action, but most over-the-counter laxatives function by a combination of increasing the amount of water available for stool absorbtion and by irritating intestinal lining.

Most laxatives work by increasing water content of stools. A common cause of constipation is a low fiber diet, which leads to hard, dry bowel movements. Some laxatives provide fiber which holds water and makes stools softer. Others work using a chemical composition which draws water into the colon, allowing for higher water content of stools.
