When your hatch layer is over 1/2 inch it can turn brown because it's growing into the thatch instead of the soil. Fertilize it in fall. Keep your grass at least 2inchs tall water it every 3 days or give it at least a inch of water.

It migh be require digging up the effected area purchasing sheets of sod from your local sod farm and laying the sheet over the blighted or bald area of your lawn. Be sure and treat te soil of blight or grubs before refertilizing and re-sodding

Cut out the damaged area with a spade. Remove and dispose of the damaged sod. Replace with fresh, un-damaged sod, water liberally for at least a week.

It depends why you have damage. If this is merely a bad lawn, you can dig out the bad part and resod with good bluegrass. However, if you have one of the few fungal problems that affect Bluegrass, or your landscape has serious damage, consult your landscaper for treatment.

First you need to remove the problem sod. Cut out the problem area going down about as deep as your thumb. Remove sod piece. Prepare the ground underneath for the new sod by disturbing the soil with a spade, water the soil and then smooth it out. Place the new sod soil side down. Pack down and water.
