Simply observe him. If he/she is constantly looking at you, smiles at you everytime he/she sees you and tries to approach you, it might be a sign that he/she's really into you! Best advice would be to just ask him/her.

It seems like the guy in your math class does like you, because he always asks for a pencil. He is trying to come into contact with you. If there is more conversation involved, he definitely likes you. If not, he could just be shy. Ask him more about himself and see where it goes!

maybe he's just always unprepared for class and just wants a pencil and knows you have one=]
