How do I know if grub worms are killing my lawn?

When grub worms attack grass, what visual clues are there? How do I know if it's these worms or another pest?

The first thing I noticed was my grass wilting and turning brown in patches. It would then start to die, and when I would remove the patches of dead I would find the worms underneath the plant eating the roots. I also had an increased presence of birds in the yard, feeding on the grubs I assume.

Grubs cause damage to the roots of your lawn. When this occurs you will start to see brown patches in the lawn. Pulling on the lawn in these patches, you will find the roots are no longer rooted into the topsoil and pull out easily. Resoding is needed to repair.

Damage from grubs is most notable from late summer to early fall. They leave irregular brown patches throughout the lawn. These patches should peel away from the soil like a piece of carpet. Dig up small sections of your lawn, couple inches deep, around these areas and look for them. They are about the size of a nickel.

If your lawn is brown and unattractive then it is probably grub worms. If there are holes or small holes where it seems animals are digging up then they are probably in search of grub worms.
