Bird netting or other permeable grass protector will help plants stay in place long enough to get a roothold. Polypropeline pasture protection blocks intended to conserve grass root systems under horses will also anchor your chosen groundcover.

Depending on the amount of acreage you have in your yard, you should avoid using too many plants that require a lot of irrigation,as you will have a lot of water running down the hill.native grasses and plants, evergreens, cacti, succulents and native trees are all good. You should avoid fragile trees like eucalyptus, because these can break and fall downhill.

The first thing you need to do is find out the best plantings for a hill and consider weather it will get a lot of sunlight or shade. Select the proper plant. The plants shoud be suggested for hills with a root system that will prevent the soil from eroding.

Installing retaining walls made of stone or brick can make a yard with steep hills more manageable. Depending on the building material you choose, they can be fairly easy to build. You can then use them to level off the area or to create a terrace effect.

The best way to landscape a steep hill is to create tiers using retaining walls. This will keep the soil from eroding and keep your plants in place.

I would cover the area with weed blocker. This will hold the dirt and plants on the hill. You will need to cut sections in the weed block for the plants. A shovel won't cut it. Weed blocker lets the plants root and will keep the soil in place. do not use plastic, your dirt will run off.
