My advice is to totally go to a professional to get it done. I have brown hair and several times I have used the "do it yourself" products at home and the results always end up being a really brassy orange color. the best way that i have found to do this is use a bleach rather then getting a carmel hair dye. if your hair is naturally dark the bleach normally takes longer to turn really blonde letting you find the exact caramel color your looking for.

Dont use a bleach. Use a high lift color. Less damage and you still get what you want. I suggest going to a professional, box colors are unpredictable
