A heart monitor works like a electrocardiogram. There is chest strap on the heart rate monitor and it uses electrodes to monitor the electrical currant when your heart beats. Then there is a receiver that detects that information from the electrodes. The radio signal from the chest strap goes to the receiver, and uses this information to determine your heart rate.

Monitors have a strap that goes around your chest. By using electrodes and radio signals you can measure electrical activity within the heart. This information is sent to a receiver that is around your wrist and the wrist receiver displays all the information.

The heart monitor, make contact with your skin and they read the electrical activity around your heart with a sensor, so you normally have it placed near your heart. The information is displayed with the help of a transmitter, which sends your heart rate.

Heart moniters check your heart rate the same way a person would check your pulse. It's basically a super accurate stethoscope.
