Diuretics inhibit reabsorption of sodium and chloride, and pull fluid out of tissues via urination. They are used to treat congestive heart failure and ascites in liver disease. Since some diuretics cause depletion of potassium, potassium supplements are sometimes given in conjunction with a diuretic.
