Think of platelets as the bodies natural bandaid. When you get a cut and it bleeds the platelets in your blood stick together at the site and make a scab. The scab keeps out germs and dirt to keep you from getting an infection.

Platelets have two primary roles in mammals. They play a fundamental role in blood clotting and they provide a variety of growth factors for natural growth and tissue repair. To help stop blood loss the platelets aggregate and form a platelet plug at the injury until the final clot forms.
