Mario was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and first appeared in the 1981 game Donkey Kong. Mario's simple, colorful look is due to the graphical limitations of the time.

Perhaps it is echoing the sentiment that anyone with determination and the right cause can be a hero. Mario isn't physically fit but he still does what he has to because lives are depending on it and because it is the right thing to do.
