During various wars people from Tennessee signed up for duty in very large numbers. Because of this newspapers began referencing the "Volunteers from Tennessee" and the name stuck.

The State of Tennessee is known by the nickname "Volunteer State" (in the same vein as "Sunshine State" referring to Florida, or "Garden State" to New Jersey) in honor of the volunteer fighting forces from Tennessee who served during the War of 1812.
