Knee replacements involve extensive open incisions and the insertion of titanium hardware. Staph organisms colonize all skin surfaces and, in spite of the administration of preoperative intravenous antibiotics and intraoperative antibiotic irrigations, can be introduced into the operative site. Even under the best conditions, the incidence of infection is approximately eighteen percent.

Unfortunately staph infections are on the rise. Are you talking about a staph infection that you got after your stay in the hospital from knee replacement surgery? Knee replacements do not cause staph infections, they are a result of contaminated areas in the hospital or surgery centers. Wearing gloves and using disinfectants are one way to keep the areas clean.

It is not very common as the doctors will give you instructions to keep away from infections. They will give you antibiotic medicines to safeguard you. So it is in your hands to protect yourself. Do not violate the instructions of the doctors at any cause. As for as possible avoid letting guests to visit you, keep your room clean.

Staph in knee replacements is one of the biggest concerns. While it does not happen all the time, it is frequent enough that it should be monitored and any signs of infection a doctor should be called immediately. Symptoms to look for are stiffness beyond the knee, pain that seems different from the surgery, and swelling.
