How can you identify an insect by its cocoon?

I found a bunch of cocoons that are all different.

Mainly, the insects that produce cocoons are the butterflies, I think that cocoons that you observed are of nocturnal butterflies

Not so. Fleas cocoon. Many inscts use cacoons to protect them while they reach final developement. Bugs that cacoon or cacooning insects can easilu be researched
