I'd say it's more like training than tricking yourself. Eating less and leaving yourself hungry can be hard to do, but over time I think your stomach will actually shrink somewhat to the size of your smaller meals, and then you won't be overeating anymore.

Eat slow and often. Familiarize yourself with foods that are low in calories. Keep yourself busy, you almost forget to eat when you work on something you enjoy. Sip green tea during the day.

One simple way to eat less is to use smaller plates. The same amount of food looks like more on a "luncheon size" plate rather than a dinner plate. Also cut your food into smaller bites, eat slowly and force yourself to stop between bites and really taste what you're eating.

You can try eating things like celery and other foods that fill you up faster. You can also chew gum or eat hard candy.

More meals in smaller portions has helped me not only eat less but lose weight. I may eat a granola bar and an apple 4-5 times a day.
