There are a number of ways to do this. The easiest is buying a Fireplace Resurfacing Kit. They are self explanatory. The second is use some paint, usually black paint is best, it covers up filth and soot from your fireplace. The third method is using tiles to just retile your fireplace.

You can paint it. Put up a new fireplace over it. Put new bricks over old. Stucco it. Put marble tiles over the whole fireplace. Make sure to think this one over carefully. Once you do any process this is it and you probably cannot change. So take photos, and cover fireplace with new ideas.

You can resurface it with stones by using grout and flat stone pieces. You can also find thin brick if you choose to put bricks as a replacement.

If you have large amounts of plaster that hang over the brick you may want to consider attempting to take some of this extra material off in order to create a more even surface. If you choose to go this route you will want to lay down some plastic to avoid getting the fine sand all over your living room.

One way to resurface your brick fireplace is to simply buy a do it yourself kit. These are relatively inexpensive and can do wonders for you fireplace. Another way to resurface your fireplace is to simply use ceramic tile, marble or natural stone over the existing tile.
