The Mercury COntrol Box of your boat has a helluva lot of parts - so where is the problem in yours. Is there a problem with with the trim switch, control arm, transmission lockout button, throttle only button, mounting bracket or gear unit (just to name a few!! )

I would seriously suggest you have a specialist check it out. A DIY job may not work well and since the control box is sooooo important you could end up risking your life when you ride your boat - don't take that risk my friend; it's not worth it.  add a comment

Mercury had a product recall for some control units manufactured between 1994 and 1995. There was some defect causing a hard gear. Do you have the serial number of your control box? If it belongs to this batch, you could get a free replacement - but maybe too late!

You will need to get the box out of the vehicle, use a metric socket wrench set. Once out it will be easier to diagnose the problem with a manual or on the phone with a certified repairman.
