What you are looking for is called a "Chimney Screen". Since chimneys come in all different dimensions, you might not be able to find a ready-made one... try your local hardware store... If you have an uncommonly dimensioned chimney, you can have one made from galvanized wire.

You can put something over the top of your chimney such as mesh wire or chicken wire. Dont put anything solid over the flue or the smoke can't escape. Just go down to a hardware store and ask for a roll of chicken or mesh wire and it is very cheap.

The only way to keep birds out of the chimney is to have someone cap the chimney. You can do this yourself with a piece of wire mesh if you know what you are doing in terms of being on a roof. Otherwise, call in the professionals.

One good way to prevent this is to invest in a metal grate that is fitted over the chimney top and prevents entrance into the flue.
