If you are going on an overnight trip and have access to a refrigerator make sure to chill the fish and not pack them in ice until you return home. To keep the fish more fresh, keep them individually wrapped in saran wrap before placing them in the cooler.

Make sure that the fish were killed right after being caught, and try to remove the stomach and gills on site. Pack fish into a insulated bin (like an ice cooler) full of ice, even pack ice into the gill and stomach cavities. Try to cook or completely freeze soon.

It all depends on the distance but putting the fish in a cooler full of ice should do the trick.

Get a cooler and pack the fish in ice and if the ice melts stop and get more and keep packing it in ice until you get home.
