Communication is very important in this case. Let your step son know that you are not trying to replace his birth mother, instead, you are a friend who wants to help him as much as you can. Teenagers are very sensitive so take your time to gain his trust.

What does he like to do? Try finding something that your stepson likes to do and do it with him. It's going to take a while to get that bond since you're not his biological parent so be patient with this process. Just be kind and understanding. In time it will work out.

You must go and slowly talk with him over a period over 2 weeks to loosen him up. You must question him because you are the symbol of authority in his life no matter what happens, and thus, you have the power to question the life of your teenage son.

Try to participate in something he is interested in, like sports and in time, he will open up and there will be dialog which will lead to a better understanding.
