You can say, "Dear, I care for you as if you were my own daughter. Because of this, I owe it to you to ensure a happy and stress free event. I must excuse myself from this event so that your parents can enjoy this day with you and without the tension my presence would cause. "

You can fake sick, or volunteer for overtime at work. Pretend to get lost on the way or mugged. Hit yourself on the head and claim amnesia. Pay off your wife. Begging sometimes works. Try negotiating. In the end you'll probably end up going, but try to get as much as possible (a weekend trip to a NASCAR RACE).

You really should not get out of going but if you must you can say you do not wish to remind her mother of and unpleasant part of her past. make it seem like you are doing it for the best of the bride. You are trying to make the bride feel comfortable.
