A lot of old family records are put on microfilm and stored in a courthouse. Some of the older churches have kept birth and baptismal records dating back a few hundred years. Some historical sociaties collect old obituaries and photos and related things from its town's people. Or, maybe the local library can help.

There is usually a Hall Of Records or some similar agency that has history of cities from a long time ago. If you can't find it there try and join one of those online geneological sites and they might have more for you.

The best place to start is at the National Archives in Washington DC. If you can't get to DC there are plenty of online ancestry services you can use to obtain the records. They just charge you a fee. Plus you would be surprised at what records states hold.
