Beads are held while the practitioner recites mantras. After finishing one repetition, another bead passes through the fingers. This way, one can concentrate on the mantra, and not the counting.

The prayer beads are called malas. They are used to count repetitions of a certain mantra. It is often believed that one should recite a certain amount of mantras daily to obtain enlightenment. If you say Buddha for example, you may say "Bud" on one bead and then "dha" on the next bead as an example.

The Buddhist prayer beads are especially used for meditation by the Buddhist monks. They use the beads to count one by one by flicking them by the fingers when their eyes closed. One full count that means a complete round is extended to many cycles until their target is achieved.

Buddhist prayer beads are used in much the same way as Christian Rosary Beads. Every time a mantra is recited, you move down one bead until none are left.
