Critical thinking can be applied to advertisements in trying to figure out who the ad campaign was designed to target and what their strategy was to persuade people to buy their product.

Advertising is generally created to appeal to your emotions or senses. A critical evaluation looks for objective, credible information you can verify about an advertised product or service.

As a consumer, you should be trying to assess the message that the company wants to convey and how they chose to present it. Companies can be very manipulative in trying to attract customers and you must look beyond the message before buying.

One consideration is recognizing who is doing the advertising. Different entity types may have different motives: a non-profit organization versus a corporation, for instance. Knowing who targets you is important.

When evaluating advertising you need to consider whether or not the consumer will remember the product or service. If you approach it from that angle then you'll go far.

You have to think of the negative aspects of your advertising. If your advertising is negative more times out of ten you will not get the customers you want. No one wants to shop somewhere where the advertising stinks.
